 Dahlia 'Dwarf Mix' |
Native Region: mountainous regions of Central America Zone Range: 08-10 Preferred Climate: tropical Harvest Date: Tuesday 08 July, 2008 Seed count: 20-25
Description: Bushy perennial with pinnate dark green leaves that produces peony-form flowers with conspicuous yellow ray florets at centre from midsummer to first frost. The flowers are mixed pastel shades. Best treated as an annual in cooler climates. This plant is ideal for massed plantings, for edging a border, or in containers.
Notes: If you want to overwinter the tuberous root, cut back stems to six inches after the first frost and lift the tubers. Brush off the soil and leave upside down to dry naturally. Dust with fungicide, pack in boxes of vermiculite or dry sand and store over winter in a well-ventilated, frost-free place.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seed in trays of fine seed starting mix in early spring; plant seeds about 1 inch apart and cover with 1/4 inch of mix. Provide bottom heat to increase the percentage and speed of germination. Germination takes 7-21 days. Harden off seedlings and plant out once all danger of frost has passed.Grow in humusy well-drained soil in full sun. Benefits from a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer weekly in early summer, followed by a high-potassium liquid fertilizer from midsummer to early autumn. Pinch out the growing point to encourage bushiness and deadhead as the flowers fade.
