Native Region: Southeast United States, Appalachian mountains Zone Range: 05-09 Preferred Climate: Temperate Harvest Date: Sunday 01 November, 2009 Seed count: 15-20

This deciduous large shrub or small tree has flaking gray-orange bark and oval green leaves that turn orange, red or gold in fall. In midsummer, white camellia-like flowers with yellow stamens appear. Height 15 feet.
Notes: Stewartias are trees of such remarkable qualities that it’s surprising they’re not more widely available.
Cultivation: Plant seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn or spring. Scarification and cold stratification may improve germination if seed is planted in the spring. Grow on in moist but well-drained neutral to acidic humusy soil in full sun or light shade. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
