 Cynara cardunculus |
Native Region: Southwest Mediterranean, Morocco Zone Range: 07-10 Preferred Climate: Mediterranean Harvest Date: Sunday 07 October, 2012 Seed count: 12-15
Description:
Large spiny silver leaves on stems that can reach up to 1.5m (4ft) or more in height are topped with large attractive artichoke-like blooms.
Notes: The stems are edible and are a classic Victorian vegetable. Now, where's that copy of Mrs. Beeton's Cookery book when you need it?
Cultivation: Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in the spring. Grow on in fertile to moderately fertile soil. The only reason this plant warrants a rating of medium difficulty is that it needs winter protection from temperatures below -5°C ( 25°F ). For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
