 Pinus pinea |
Native Region: Mediterranean Zone Range: 06-09 Preferred Climate: Mediterranean Harvest Date: Monday 23 November, 2009 Seed count: 10-12
Notes: This is the tree that produces those wonderful pine nuts that help make pesto complete. In time these trees grow to have a broad flat crown, earning them the common name Umbrella Pine. The shelled kernels are the part eaten, but the whole seed must be intact for it to remain viable - Do not shell the seed before planting
Cultivation: This Mediterranean native does not require stratification to germinate, although it may be sown in the autumn in warm winter regions, otherwise it is best sown in the sping. Plant seeds in sterile potting medium and grow on in a sheltered location for the first year. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
