This rosette-forming biennial has spiny white-veined and marbled, glossy dark green leaves. In the second year after sowing, the plant produces thistle-like purplish-pink flowerheads from summer to fall. Height to 5 feet. Suits a mixed or herbaceous border or a gravel garden.

Thin seedlings to 24 inches apart. Grow in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Protect from winter moisture.
