Description:
This columnar deciduous tree has peeling red-brown to gray bark. The ovate green leaves turn yellow, orange or red in fall. White camellia-like flowers with yellow stamens appear in mid-summer. Height to 70 feet; spread 25 feet in nature. In gardens, height typically about 30 feet.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Plant seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn or spring. Scarification and cold stratification may improve germination if seed is planted in the spring. Grow on in moist but well-drained neutral to acidic humusy soil in full sun or light shade.
