 Pinus ponderosa |
Native Region: Southern British Columbia to northeast California Zone Range: 05-08 Preferred Climate: Subalpine to coastal temperate Harvest Date: Sunday 05 July, 2009 Seed count: 10-12
Description: A pine of distinction, the Ponderosa pine, or Western Yellow Pine, grows to 50m ( 164ft ) but will remain somewhat smaller in most gardens. Long needles and an open branch structure make for an elegant silhouette.
Cultivation: Sow seed in autumn in containers out doors. For spring sowings, the seed should be stratified - place in sterile damp sand and refrigerate for up to 6 weeks. Check for spouting after the fourth week. Plant seeds, or sprouted seeds, in sterile potting medium and grow on in a sheltered location for the first year. Grow in any moist well-drained soil in full sun. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
