Description:
This tree is a true living fossil and one of the oldest known conifers still surviving today. Slow growing, individual trees can live for centuries, if not millennia. Well suited to temperate coastal climates, this tree will be the focal point of any garden. Occurs in mixed middle altitude cloud forest at 500-1000 m, with high rainfall and humidity. Will tolerate climates from cool temperate to subtropical, if sufficient humidity is present. Height 30-70 feet; spread 20-25 feet.
Notes: Please be aware that this is a notoriously difficult seed to germinate.
Cultivation: Sow seed in autumn in containers out doors. For spring sowings, the seed should be stratified - place in sterile damp sand and refrigerate for up to 6 weeks. Check for spouting after the fourth week. Plant seeds, or sprouted seeds, in sterile potting medium and grow on in a sheltered location for the first year. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
