Malus yunnanensis
Malus yunnanensis

Native Region: China- mountains of Yunnan, Sichuan
Zone Range: 06-08
Preferred Climate: Cool to warm temperate
Harvest Date: Sunday 16 October, 2011
Seed count: 15-20

Description:
This species of crabapple is not often seen in western gardens, but nonetheless this small tree definitely deserves greater attention. The white to faintly blushed pink blooms emerge with the foliage in spring, and are followed in summer and fall by attractive red fruit which persist into the winter. Foliage turns orange, purple and red in fall. Height and spread 20 feet.

Cultivation:
Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn, or if sowing in spring, cold stratification is required for good germination. Grow in moderately-fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.

Harvest Date: Sunday 16 October, 2011
