Description:
Large deciduous shrub/small tree with green pinnate leaves. Trunk has pyramidal spines on smooth grey bark. Bears panicles of green flowers in summer, followed by aromatic pink fruit. Height/spread 15-20 feet.
Notes: The young leaves are used in Japan as a vegetable and garnish.The pink seed coating is a popular spice in many oriental dishes.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until time to plant. Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in the fall. If seed is stored, cold stratification for 3 months or scarification may help germination. Grow on in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun.
