Description:
Spreading deciduous tree that bears white flowers in late spring, followed by spherical fleshy brown fruit. Height 20 feet; spread 25 feet. The tree is self-fertile. The fruit is hard and acidic, but becomes edible after being bletted by frost.
Notes: Mespilus germanica requires warm summers and mild winters and prefers sunny, dry locations and slightly acidic soil. Under ideal circumstances, the deciduous plant grows up to 8 metres (26 ft) tall. Generally, it is shorter and more shrub-like than tree-like.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seed in a seedbed in autumn. Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or light shade.
