Description:
Vigorous, late-flowering twining deciduous climber. Produces many solitary, bell-shaped yellow flowers, 1-1/2 inches long, from mid-summer to late autumn. These are followed by attractive fluffy seedheads. Grows 15-20 feet high and 6-10 feet wide.
Notes:
This clematis is in Group 3; it flowers on the current year's wood. Cut back all the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds 6-8 inches above soil level in early spring.
Cultivation:
Sow seeds in early spring into pots using standard soil-less seed compost. Cover with perlite or vermiculite, place under protection at 20 degrees Celsius for two weeks.Then put in a cold frame at 2-4 degrees Celsius for a month. Move container to a warm situation, increasing the warmth slowly until the seed germinates (about 1 week after being introduced to the warmth).Grow in fertile, humusy, well-drained soil in sun or part shade, with the roots and base of the plant in the shade. Mulch in late winter with compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding the crown. Provide strong support and tie in initially until plants begin to climb by themselves.
