Zone Range: 03-09
Preferred Climate: Cool to Warm Temperate

Seed count: 10-12

Description:
This hardy species of evergreen bamboo tends to clump rather than run, and is well suited to the home garden. Slow-growing to form a dense clump of erect, dark purple-green culms. Height 15 feet;spread 5 feet.

Notes:
Seed is rarely available and requires a certain amount of skill to germinate.

Cultivation:
Soak seed in a germination enhancer such as Skookum Grow (available at http://www.plantexplorers.com/twiningvine). Seed germinates more readily when sown in a plastic bag. Mix equal parts horticultural sand and peat; the mixture should be moist but still crumbly. Place in clean plastic bag with seed and gently shake to mix. Remove most of the air, roll up the bag and place it in a larger plastic bag. Place bag somewhere it will receive gentle warmth. Once seeds sprout, transfer them to individual pots. Place pots under protection at 5 degrees Celsius. Cover with perlite or vermiculite. Do not allow the compost to dry out. Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in partial shade with shelter from cold drying winds.

Harvest Date: Sunday 19 July, 2009
