Melica altissima 'atropurpurea' |
Native Region: Europe, Asia Zone Range: 05-08 Preferred Climate: Temperate Harvest Date: Tuesday 28 September, 2004 Seed count: 25-30
Description: This tufted perennial grass has mid-green linear leaves and bears purple spikelets with densely flowered tips in summer. Height 2-5 feet; spread 32 inches.
Notes: Grasses, long ignored as ornamentals, are now enjoying a growing popularity, especially with the increase in dry gardening techniques.
Cultivation: Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in spring or autumn. Seed may be sown in situ, but there is always the problem with birds eating the seeds before they grow. Grow in moderately-fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
