 Platanus orientalis |
Native Region: Southeast Asia Zone Range: 07-08 Preferred Climate: temperate Harvest Date: Tuesday 07 April, 2026 Seed count: 30-40
Description:
Vigorous, spreading deciduous tree with attractive flaking gray, brown and cream bark. Its glossy green leaves are deeply 5-lobed and up to 10 inches long. Produces green, later brown, fruit clusters in groups of up to six, which persist into winter. Can reach 100 feet height and spread. This imposing tree is best for large gardens or parks, or as a street tree. Good shade tree. Tolerates pollution in urban areas.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Two months cold stratification improves germination. Sow in spring in a cold frame in light shade. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
