 Cardiocrinum giganteum |
Native Region: Himalayas, Burma, China Zone Range: 07-09 Preferred Climate: Temperate woodland Harvest Date: Sunday 09 November, 2025 Seed count: 30-40
Description:
Growing up to 3m (10ft) or more in height when flowering, these beautiful bulbous perennial plants produce tall spires with large scented white blooms in early summer. The mid to dark green heart-shaped leaves form attractive hosta-like rosettes on immature plants.
Notes: There are few plants that can make a dramatic impact like this astounding bulb from the Himalayas. While it can take seven years to grow to flowering size, it is well worth the time and effort. Seed grown plants can produce some of the tallest specimens. Although the main bulb dies after flowering, numerous 'daughter' bulbs will be produced that can reach flowering size in only 3-5 years.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn to early spring. Spread seeds on the surface of seed starting medium and sprinkle lightly with coarse sand. Bulbs should be grown on in deep, humus-rich, well-drained soil in part shade.
