Description:
Lovely deciduous tree with peeling red-brown bark that bears white, camellia-like blooms in mid-summer. The densely arranged dark green leaves turn shades of red, yellow and orange in fall. Height/spread 22 feet.
Notes: This species, from Hubei province in China, is beautiful throughout the year.
Scarification may improve germination. If sowing seed in spring, warm stratify for 4 months; follow with period of 3 months of cold stratification. Then plant in containers at 20 degrees Celsius for germination.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn or spring. Grow on in moist but well-drained, acidic humusy soil in full sun or light shade.
