Phormium tenax
Phormium tenax
Native Region: New Zealand
Zone Range: 09-10
Preferred Climate: Temperate
Harvest Date: Sunday 18 August, 2019
Seed count: 30-40

Description:
The rigid linear leaves on mature specimens can grow to 3m (10ft) or more in height, and the giant candelabra-like flower stalks can reach an amazing 6m (19ft) or more on this clump-forming evergreen perennial.

Notes:
This is one of the most strikingly architectural plants you are ever likely to grow in your garden. The genus Phormium is now in the family Xanthorrhoeaceae.

Cultivation:
For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seed in flats with gentle bottom heat, 15-18°C (59-64°F) in spring. Seedlings will look small and grass-like. Grow on in containers of humus rich, moist, but well drained soil in full sun. In the first 1-2 years of growth, it is best to avoid temperatures much below freezing. When plants are large enough to plant out, select a sunny position where soil is rich, moist and well drained. Winter shelter from drying winds will help maintain leaves from year to year. If temperatures are prone to dropping below -5°C (25°F) a deep dry mulch can help.

Harvest Date: Sunday 18 August, 2019
