Pyramidal evergreen shrub with lance-shaped glossy green leaves which are anise-scented and deer-resistant. Bears star-shaped pink to crimson flowers in late spring, followed by red-brown star-shaped fruit. Height/spread 6-8 feet.
Notes: Unlike Star Anise (Illicum verum), the seeds and seed pods of Henry's Anise (Illicum henryi) are not edible and should not be used in cooking.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow seeds as soon as the ground warms up in spring. The plant is taprooted, so should be started either in its final location or transplanted while the seedlings are small. Grow in moist, but well-drained humusy acidic soil in full sun or part shade. Provide shelter from drying winds.
