Aronia melanocarpa

Black Chokeberry

ca$ 4.50
Seed count: 25-30
Aronia melanocarpa
Aronia melanocarpa
Native Region: Eastern North America
Zone Range: 05-08
Preferred Climate: Temperate woodland
Harvest Date: Tuesday 29 October, 2024
Seed count: 25-30

Description:
Growing to 1.5m this Aronia is somewhat smaller than the closely related Aronia arbutifolia but still manages to put on a show most seasons. The white summer flowers are small but plentiful among the mid to dark green leaves, and are followed by black shiny fruit that can persist well into the winter. The autumn foliage colour ranges from yellow through orange and is reliable regardless of the weather. The bare branches festooned with the black berries can be very attractive in fall and winter flower arrangements.

Cultivation:
Fall sowings may be made directly into pots of sterilized potting medium and placed in a coldframe. For spring sowings, the seed should be soaked in pure clean water then placed in pots of sterilized growing medium and refrigerated for 6-8 weeks. Move pots to a coldframe to germinate. Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in sun to part shade. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.

Harvest Date: Tuesday 29 October, 2024
